Cincinnati is a large city in the southwestern corner of Ohio. It is 100 miles south of Columbus, the capital of Ohio, and 20 miles east of the Ohio River, which serves as a dividing line between Ohio and Kentucky. Cincinnati had a population of almost 300,000 people in 2016 according to the United States Census Bureau. It is the third largest city in Ohio and the largest city in Hamilton County.
Original inhabitants of the area Cincinnati is located in were Native American peoples of the Shawnee tribe. Eventually, settlers of European descent arrived in the region and pushed out the Native Americans. In 1789, Fort Washington was constructed. General Arthur St. Clair renamed the fort Society of the Cincinnati and established the new settlement as the county seat in 1790. In 1802, Cincinnati became an incorporated municipality.
